This survey produced by Edmund Pettis provides a uniquely detailed portrait of the early eighteenth-century town in words and pictures. Maps of the parish, and line drawings of many of the principal buildings as they were in 1728 accompany a sometimes acerbic account of the town's history and of its leading families.
This facsimile reproduction will delight all who know the modern town of St. Ives, but the volume will also be welcomed by a wider readership for the light it sheds on the economy and structure of a small market town at the beginning of the modern era. Pettis's lists of tax payers in 1732 provide essential information on local trade and industry and the progress of enclosure, and the importance of this material is well brought out in the extensive introduction by Dr Mary Carter.
